The city of São João da Madeira has its origin in industry, and it is not by chance that it uses the nickname of city of work.
Being the smallest municipality in Portugal it contains, in its area of 8km square, a large and diversified industrial web, counting on unique companies in the country that are milestones in our collective history.
Aware of the value that the industry represents for the municipality, the City Council in a partnership with Viarco, Fepsa, Cortadoria Nacional, Everest, Helsar, Heliotextil, The Millinery Museum, Footwear Technological Center of Portugal and the Center for Professional Training of Footwear Industry, created the innovative project of Industrial Tourism with the objective to show the best of what is produced in this city.
This is an opportunity for visitors to learn about different manufacturing processes in a fast, convenient and very educational way.
Located in Torre da Oliva – one of the most emblematic and historical buildings of S. João da Madeira – the Welcome Center is a place where you can get all the information you need about Industrial Tourism in S. João da Madeira and on the Circuits by the Industrial Patrimony. Here you can make reservations to visit factories, request the service of an industrial tour guide, ask questions and workshops scheduling. A team will be available to assist you and to introduce you to your industrial tour guide or provide the multimedia guide for the factories or institutions you wish to visit.
Make a visit to the Welcome Center and discover, right there, what we have to show you. Check the interactive table with information about the circuit, learn about the history of Viarco and the Oliva factory, through two interactive timeline bars. This place is the starting point for an unforgettable journey into the past, present and future of our industrial history.
Entering the factory is like making a trip to the time of the Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing complexes that the history books describe.
